Blogpost by Genon K. Jensen, HEAL founder and Executive Director on the need to prioritise health in the 2024 EU elections: it is time policymakers take strong and consistent action to address climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution for their constituents' benefit.
Today, the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety voted on the revision of the EU’s Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD) (2022/0347(COD)).
The report by rapporteur Javi Lopez was adopted with 46 in favour, 41 against and 1 abstention, with all compromise amendments adopted.
Anne Stauffer, Deputy Director of the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) comments:
“The ENVI committee has taken a major step towards cleaner air for everyone today: health groups are delighted that MEPs followed the science, and people’s needs by supporting an ambitious overhaul of the EU’s clean air standards.
Clean air is a question of political will, not an individual or lifestyle choice. This political will now needs to show in the European Parliament plenary.”
