As the revision of EU chemicals legislation REACH is underway, the Health and Environment Alliance urges the European Commission to uphold its commitments on safer chemicals and ensure that ambitious health protections remain at the heart of the project.
People’s health is threatened like never before from climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The next years will see the implementation of crucial legislation and further measures to protect health against this triple crisis, which need to be adequately financed. As the policy deliberations on the next EU budget for 2028-2034, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), have started, HEAL considers it crucial that health protection from climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution is at the core of spending and investment priorities.
HEAL’s position paper aims to provide an overview of the evidence on the current health cost from pollution and climate change, providing an overview of the current deliberations and policy considerations on the next EU budget and to set forward a series of science-based recommendations for EU policymakers. These include the investment into better health, not pollution, while promoting equity; the setting of strong conditions for healthy and zero pollution investments; and the swift phasing out of EU subsidies for fossil fuels.
