HEAL has submitted a response to the European Commission’s call for evidence on better regulation: uphold and strengthen health protective, science-based EU lawmaking.

The growing evidence of health harm from the triple planetary crisis calls for urgent and increased policy action. Instead of trying to weaken the existing health protective framework (with eroding civil society and independent scientific input into EU law making processes) the EU Commission should step up implementation and enforcement of existing legislation for better health.

This includes increased financing of pollution prevention and climate resilience action. Transparency, civil society involvement, and health costing (of inaction) should be principles ‘by design’, and will result in ‘simple’ development and implementation of EU policies, tackling complex issues.
