Today’s publication of the European Commission’s chemicals omnibus confirms serious concerns: if pushed through the proposal will significantly weaken protections in the Cosmetic Products Regulation, allowing the prolonged use of carcinogens and other harmful chemicals in personal care products.
More than 90 organisations have written to EU Commission President Von der Leyen regarding the PFAS pollution crisis:
The time has come for decisive action. Europe has the opportunity to lead globally in protecting its natural assets, safeguarding public health and preserving the environment. Through robust regulation and the promotion of innovation, the EU can set an example of a toxic-free, future-proof, and competitive economy.
Specifically, the organisations call to:
- Defend a comprehensive PFAS ban to cut pollution at source.
- End industry interference.
- Hold polluters accountable.
- Implement a monitoring and remediation plan.
- Support affected citizens.
- Boost the supply of safe alternatives.
- Modernise the EU’s chemicals law.
- Support PFAS regulation at global level.
