Dieselgate - EU action to protect citizen’s health

EU court hearing puts spotlight on Commission delay over hormone disrupting chemicals
HEAL’s Lisette van Vliet attended a crucial court hearing against the EU Commission. The EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg heard Sweden’s case against the Commission for failing to fulfil its legal obligations regarding endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Read more…

Upcoming Medical Device Regulation Negotiations
HEAL supports a letter to the EU Parliament Rapporteur on the draft Medical Device Regulation, urging the Parliament to stand strong and uphold an amendment calling for the phase-out of toxic chemicals contained in medical devices when safer alternatives are available and technically feasible. HEAL welcomes EP Committee vote on DEHP
The EU Parliament’s Environment and Health Committee recently voted to support an objection to the Commission’s proposal to continue the use of the phthalate, DEHP, a reproductive toxicant and EDC, in recycled materials such as PVC. DEPH is already officially listed as an EDC for the environment and it may be linked to male infertility due to environmental exposure of pregnant women. Read more...

30 NGOs call for partial glyphosate ban
HEAL joins civil society organisations to convey serious concerns regarding the authorisation renewal assessment report on glyphosate that was produced under the aegis of German authorities and forms the basis for the ongoing peer review by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Read more…

Health groups call to end fossil fuel subsidies
On 14 November, civil society organisations from all over the world, including HEAL, issued an urgent call to end all public financing for fossil fuels. HEAL works closely with Turkish health groups, and the call came on the eve of the G20 leaders Summit in Turkey. Read more…

MEPs stand up for citizens’ health in air quality vote
HEAL welcome’s last month’s EU Parliament Plenary vote on air quality, putting citizens’ interests and wishes first. Member States should take this prompt for their upcoming exchange in December’s Environment Council. Read more…

Plans to build new Polish Leczna coal plant abandoned
GDF Suez Energy Poland, which is part of the French energy company ENGIE, announced that it would not go ahead with building the Leczna coal-fired power plant in south-eastern Poland. A recent HEAL assessment showed that the future plant would lead to high health costs. Read more…

The threat of increased mercury exposure in the Western Balkans
A new HEAL briefing looks at the emerging public health threat from increasing mercury exposure in the Western Balkans. The briefing, available in English and Serbian, was launched last month in Belgrade, Serbia as part of an exchange on tackling mercury exposure in these countries. Read more…
