Prescription for a healthy planet

Health is being forgotten in the climate change talks despite the fact that climate change is likely to eclipse the major known pandemics as the leading cause of death and disease in the 21st century.

The Prescription for a Healthy Planet campaign diagnoses the global threats to public health that climate change poses, while urging the world’s governments to negotiate a strong, binding agreement. The Prescription provides a simple set of policy recommendations, or ‘doctors orders’ for EU and global climate negotiators to heal the ailing planet:

  • protect public health,
  • promote clean energy,
  • set strong targets on emission reductions,
  • mandate major funding for developing countries.

The Prescription for a Healthy Planet campaign aims to increase focus on the effects of human health and to bring the voice of the health sector into climate discussions. It was launched in the crucial weeks leading up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting in Copenhagen in 2009, and endorsed by more than 130 organisations around the globe. Initiated by HEAL and other global partners, the Prescription still holds true for climate talks in Durban and is highlighted in the Durban Declaration on Climate and Health.
