From 4 to 11 February 2014, HEAL is co-hosting a Health and Environment documentaries programme and debate as part of the 31st International Environmental Film Festival in Paris. Philip J. Landrigan and Ruth A. Etzel, two leading U.S. paediatricians compiled and edited this landmark textbook. HEAL contributed to this effort with a chapter focusing on public policy on children’s environmental health in Europe. Read more…

EDC-Free campaign partners call on EU Commission President Barroso for urgent action on EDCs Banner carrying EDC-Free Europe campaigners handed the cabinet of EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso, a colourful collage of photos by citizens and groups around Europe who are concerned about EDCs, asking for immediate action to bring out delayed EU EDC proposals. HEAL welcomes manifesto on breast cancer launched in UK

Breast Cancer UK presented its manifesto on 23 October ‘Prevention is better than cure: 5 pledges for 2015 and beyond’ calling on the UK Government to stop breast cancer before it starts. HEAL and other UK health groups co-signed this manifesto. Read more…

Collaboration with GAHP at EP event on the global health footprint of development

In October the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) collaborated with MEP Michele Rivasi, the World Bank, HEAL and the European Cancer Leagues at a seminar in the EP to raise awareness about the burden of disease from chemicals, waste and toxic pollution. Read more…

Health and medical organisations convene successful Climate and Health Summit in Warsaw

On 16 November the 2nd International Climate and Health Summit took place in Warsaw alongside the official COP19 climate negotiations. The Summit was organised by the Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA) together with the World Medical Association and the WHO. HEAL is a founding member of the Alliance and the local convening partner of the Summit. Read more…

Cough4coal: HEAL’s work inspires creative action in Berlin and Warsaw

An eight metre tall set of inflatable pink lungs were recently created by artist Artur van Balen as a tool for the international Cough4Coal campaign, which made an appearance outside a Coal and Climate Summit in Warsaw. Medical students, NGOs and the general public public joined the ‘people before coal’ protect, and HEAL provided expertise on the health impacts of coal during the development phase of the campaign. Joint letter to EU Commissioners on the revision of the Thematic Strategy on air pollution

On 17 October HEAL signed a joint letter with environmental and citizens organisations to urge the EU Commission to adopt an ambitious package for cleaner air in the EU. Read more…

ESCAPE shows air pollution linked to low birth weight

A publication by the ESCAPE project of a study in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine shows that exposure to ambient air pollutants and traffic during pregnancy is associated with restricted foetal growth. Read more…

IARC says air pollution causes cancer

In October the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialist agency of the World Health Organization, classified outdoor air pollution as carcinogenic to humans. Read more…

Zero Mercury Working Group welcomes new Mercury Convention, calls for its speedy ratification

The Zero Mercury Working Group, an international coalition of over 95 NGOs urges 50 countries to step up and ratify the new Mercury Convention by 2015 - ‘50 by 2015 – Make it Happen!’ Read more…
