WEN – Petition for ban on plastic microbeads used in cosmetic products in the UK

The issue of harmful chemicals contained in cosmetic and toiletry products has been central to WEN’s campaigning. While their findings mainly focused on the direct health implications of using such products, it has also become clear that these micro plastics are also causing serious damage to marine ecosystems – and too many consumers remain unaware of the impact their use of toothpaste or shampoo can have on the environment.

This short video produced by The Story of Stuff Project provides a quick overview of the issues at hand. Plastic microbeads cost less to the manufacturer and require a more regular use as they are less efficient than natural products.

You can take action by asking the British Government to ban microbeads from all cosmetic products sold in the UK. You can also check out the WEN website ’Health and Harmful Chemicals Resources’ section for some extra information and homemade scrub recipes that will leave your skin glowing without intoxicating marine life down the line!
