Fundacion Alborada – Spain consumes the most pesticides in Europe

During the ‘Primavera Sin Pesticidas’ (Pesticide Action Week), HEAL member Fundacion Alborada and HEAL partners Fundacion Vivo Sano, Ecologistas en Accion and weMove.EU met with representatives from the medical, political, and law community in Madrid to discuss the health consequences of pesticide use.

This unique event, which was supported by Members of the European Parliament Florent Marcellesi and Paloma López Bermejo, saw three victims of pesticides speak about their experiences with exposure to harmful pesticides and how this changed their lives.

The event was part of ‘Primavera Sin Pesticidas’ (Pesticide Action Week’ in Spain, an annual international event aiming to promote alternatives to pesticides and to improve the environment and health). The issue of pesticide protection is especially relevant in Spain, as it is the largest consumer of pesticides in Europe.

During the event, two new reports on the harmful effects of pesticides and other endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were presented. The ‘No Brainer’ report, published by the UK-based NGO Chem Trust, shows the harmful impact that chemical exposure can have on children’s brains. The ‘Directo A Tus Hormonas’ report by Ecologistas en Accion reviews the effects of pesticide residues in Spanish foods.
