HEAL at EU Sustainable Energy week

HEALer Anne Stauffer participated in a panel debate on the EU’s energy policies after 2020 and highlighted the external health costs of our energy decisions.

The discussion “Where do we go from here? Energy policy after 2020” was organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and brought together panellists from business groups, renewable energy, chemical and gas industry and HEAL for a lively exchange on the EU Emissions Trading System, investment in renewables and EU overall climate ambition.

HEAL called on decision-makers to fully take into account the health external costs of different forms of energy production. Our fossil-fuel dependent economies come with huge environmental and health costs which have to be borne by the individuals and society at large.

A recent report by HEAL highlighted that coal-fired power generation in Europe produces a health bill of up to 43 bn EUR annually.
