Joint letter on the position of Chief Scientific Advisor to the President of the EU Commission
The group of NGOs including HEAL, HEAL members Réseau Environnement Santé (RES), The Cancer Prevention and Education Society, Pesticide Action Network Europe and other organisations including Greenpeace, Corporate Europe Observatory, Earth OpenSource and Sciences Citoyennes sent a letter to the new President of the EU Commission expressing their concern regarding the position of Chief Scientific Advisor to the President of the EU Commission.
This post was created by Commission President Barroso whereby its mandate is “to provide independent expert advice on any aspect of science, technology and innovation as requested by the President”.
In contrast to wishes for the position to be upheld, these organisations urge for the position to not be renewed. The post of Chief Scientific Adviser is problematic as it concentrates too much influence in one person, and undermines in-depth scientific research and assessments carried out by or for the Commission directorates in the course of policy elaboration.
