Regional climate change mitigation
Some examples of eligible activities in this category include:
- Sustainable and healthy transport: A UK Hospital encouraged staff to use more sustainable and healthy methods of transport by offering: interest-free loans for pedal cycle or motorcycle/scooter purchases; 16 "pooled" cars on loan to staff; a car-share scheme; and discounts on weekly bus tickets.
- Renewable energy: Following a feasibility study, a wind study and an environmental impact assessment (EIA), a UK hospital obtained planning permission for a wind turbine. The 40 metre high 660 kW Vestas V47 wind turbine is the largest at any hospital in the UK and will generate an average of 1.2 million units of electricity per annum.
Regional climate change adaptation
Some examples of eligible activities in this category include:
- Health surveillance programmes: In 2007 a French National Health Institute implemented a heat wave information campaign designed to deliver targeted information to the most vulnerable groups in society such as children, patient groups, and elderly people. Using television, radio, press, and posters the campaign explained the consequences of heat exposure and how best to protect oneself.
- Planning and developing decisions on infrastructure and buildings that consider how the climate is expected to change: For example, to adapt to increased heat waves, hospital, health services and communities can explore options for making their environment cooler (e.g., planting more trees to increase shade, painting roofs white, and so on.)
