Please type in block letters and submit your electronic form by email to Janaina Topley-Lira at jana@env-health.org. To help reduce the carbon footprint of this competition please do not print and fax this entry form unless it is really necessary!
The total application pack should not exceed 1500 words.The entry also serves as your submission to the Good Practice Web Portal.
Awards guidelines
Who can apply?
The awards are open to projects implemented or planned by local councils, regional health, environment, transport, or energy authorities, academic institutions, educational or health care sector establishments.
For eligibility good practice examples should as far as possible meet the following criteria:
- Candidates may be from among the 27 European Union countries
- Candidates should be self-nominated
- Candidate projects should promote and protect human health AND contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reductions or take action to cope with a changing climate
- Candidates should demonstrate a real (not theoretical) project that has already been implemented or is planned
Awards categories
- Climate Change Mitigation Initiatives - Projects should have a health focus and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reductions through:
- Sustainable and healthy transport;
- Waste reduction and water efficiency;
- Renewable energy & energy efficiency;
- Sustainable procurement;
- Green buildings;
- Introduction of environmental management system.
- Climate Change Adaptation Initiatives - Projects should contribute to adapting to the inevitable health impacts of climate change through:
- Identifying priority health risks or vulnerable groups;
- Health surveillance programmes;
- Identifying capacity of health care system to respond;
- Planning and developing decisions on infrastructure and buildings that consider how the climate is expected to change;
- Improved medical care services/ emergency plans for infectious diseases/ natural disasters/ heat-related illness;
- Capacity building for health professionals;
- Public education.
Evaluation criteria
Criterion 1: Originality
The project should be innovative in the chosen category and inventiveness should be evident in the technical implementation. Originality will be assessed as follows:
- Is the project novel?
- Does it include better financing schemes; technical developments; training and skills development?
- How are barriers handled?
- Are there instruments in place to handle change?
Criterion 2: Relevancy
The project should contribute both to promoting and protecting health, and to climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Criterion 3: Transferability
We want to showcase schemes that have significant potential to be followed by others, and that will encourage the widespread uptake of local, sustainable energy.
- To what extent is the case transferable and/or inspiring to others
- What activities have been carried out to share experience?
Both evidence provided and the description of the lessons learned will be taken into account.
Criterion 4: Results
Has, the project, or will the project deliver demonstrable benefits for both climate change and health? Results will be assessed as follows:
- Does the project deliver both health and climate change benefits
- Is the implementation strategy effective?
- Does the partnership strategy yield real results?
- Is the project sustainable over time?
Criterion 5: Costs
Is the project cost-effective?
Criterion 6: Information and Raising Awareness
Does the project increase public understanding of the health consequences of climate change?
Selection process
Following an eligibility screening, each application will be evaluated by the panel of independent experts from various European countries.
All applicants will receive electronic notification of the outcome of the evaluation by the end of May.
The list of Finalists will be published online.
All Finalists will be required to attend the conference.

Application should be submitted in English. All sections of the submission form have to be filled in for your submission to be eligible.
