SHAPES: a new Belgian project on health risks and benefits of cycling

Earlier this year, a new inter-disciplinary project aiming at quantifying and analyzing the pros and cons of switching off from commuting in cars to commuting in bicycles was launched in Belgium. The SHAPES project (Systematic analysis of Health risks and physical Activity associated with cycling Policies) is the result of a partnership between the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, VITO, an independent research organization, and the Universite Catholique de Louvain.

The project will deal with air pollution, physical condition, injury registration, accident risks and develop a scientific modal framework to analyse risks and benefits of a switch from cars to bicycles. It will also provide valuable recommendations and guidance for policy-makers. The overall aim is to obtain sound data and analysis on public health implications when designing transport policies and legislating on car emissions.

People can participate in the project by registering on the injury registration form and by filling a questionnaire only available in French and Dutch.
