World Environment Day 2008

World Environment Day is held every 5 June and is a means for the United Nations to draw attention on the urgent need to take individual and collective action to protect our planet. 2008 World Environment Day slogan was “Kick the Habit! Towards a low carbon economy”.

Through the “Kick the Habit” slogan, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) asked public authorities, civil society and industry to preserve our environment. Several initiatives took place to promote more environmentally friendly behaviours and strategies, such as low carbon economy and lifestyles. 2008 World Environment Day website gives many illustrative examples and case studies on improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption. The website also delivers easy tips for individuals to lower their carbon footprint:
* Choose energy-saving light bulbs
* Set your washing machine temperature to 30 degrees C
* Think about renewable sources of energy
* Use public transport and bicycles instead of private cars
* Turn off everything when you go to bed (instead of leaving on standby)

The World Environment Day website also lists all initiatives taken by cities and countries in this very special day in order to sensibilise population and policy makers on environment protection.
