Canadian Cancer Society Conference on pesticides and cancer, 12-13 November 2008

The Canadian Cancer Society, a leader in cancer control in Canada, is organizing a two day science-based, groundbreaking conference about pesticides and cancer, with support from the National Cancer Institute of Canada. The conference, to be held on 12-13 November 2008, will host experts from world renowned organizations - such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer, World Health Organization and the U.S. National Cancer Institute. They will lead discussion on the state of the science on pesticides and cancer.

While the Society is an active advocate for banning the cosmetic use of pesticides, the focus of this conference is non-cosmetic use, for example, spraying agricultural crops.

Because of growing public concern, the Canadian Cancer Society recognizes the need to explore important issues such as:
* how and where adults and children are exposed to pesticides - at home, work and play
* agricultural pesticide use and exposure
* pesticide policy and regulation

Conference objectives

* Presenting the body of evidence about adult and childhood pesticide exposure - at work, in communities, in what we eat - and its association with cancer risk.
* Presenting precautionary-based policy alternatives to minimize pesticide exposure.
* Building a knowledge exchange network about pesticides and cancer for the public, health care professionals, public health practitioners and decision makers.
* Identifying gaps in current research. Who should attend?
* public health practitioners and health care professionals
* policy makers, administrators and communicators
* individuals and organizations concerned about pesticide exposure and cancer risk
* environmental, agricultural and labour groups
* researchers
