Mercury, fish and childbearing: an article by HEAL and HCWH

The latest issue of the Women and Environments International magazine on "women and toxics" features an article by HEAL and HealthCare Without Harm (HCWH) about our joint mercury campaign.

The article, which is entitled, "Mercury, fish and childbearing: what every woman should know to protect children and the planet" highlights the survey findings published in the campaign report. It shows the ways in which the campaign drew attention to women’s current levels of mercury and thus provided a concrete example of low-level exposure to an environmental toxic.

Like the campaign, the article concludes that women’s current levels of exposure to mercury in the diet, and perhaps at work, may significantly harm the health of her unborn child if she is pregnant. Mercury has been scientifically shown to harm human health even at low doses, and is especially dangerous for the mental development of the child when exposure takes place in the womb.

The same issue includes articles written by our colleagues:
* Keeping Babies Safe by Sharyle Patton, The Commonweal Health and Environment Program and
* Breast Cancer: The Link with pesticides by Meriel Watts, PAN Asia and the Pacific.
