FOEE reports untested nanomaterials in consumer products

On 10 March, Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) released a new report entitled “Out of the laboratory and on to our plates: Nanotechnology in food and agriculture”. FoEE found out that untested nanomaterials were present in food and in food packaging in the EU market.

In addition to the fact that the presence of those nanomaterials is totally unknown to consumers, there is also a legislative gap on nanomaterials used in food. According to the report, at least 104 products contain manufactured nanomaterials or are produced using nanotechnology.

These untested substances are potentially harmful to consumers health and European legislators should ensure that there is adequate legislation concerning consumers’ safety. Therefore, FoEE urges decision makers to take appropriate actions and regulate nanomaterials as their use is expanding quickly.
