White paper to prevent additional use of unnecessary fire retardants

On 6 March 2008, environmental organisations issued a common white paper against the adoption of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standard 62368. This standard would bring additional chemicals in electronics composition in order for them to be resistant to candle flame.

However, according to the White Paper co-signatories there is no scientific evidence showing that those additional fire retardants are an adequate solution.

The White Paper entitled “The Case against Candle Resistant Electronics” gathers organisations’ argument against the use of additional chemicals. Important facts to take into consideration are that it will weaken recycling capacity of those electronics and that hundreds of millions of pounds of additional chemicals will be introduced in schools, homes and workplaces.

In addition, figures contained in the White Paper show that consequences for public health and environment will outweigh benefits.

Co-authors asked people and organizations to sign the White Paper so it will have more impact when the IEC will meet to decide on the adoption or not of this standard.
