A Croatian city, Koprivnica, was awarded the European Mobility Week prize by the Environment Commissioner, Stavros Dimas in February 2008.
The European Mobility Week prize awards sustainable public transport and alternatives to cars. This year theme was “Streets for People”. It encouraged municipalities to make more road space for non-motorized forms of mobility.
This annual event aimed to raise awareness on public health and unveil new and sustainable solutions for heavily polluted urban areas. 2,000 cities participated in the 2008 contest and Francfort and Arad (Romania) were the runner ups.
Koprivnica outstanding performance in improving mobility for disabled, promoting walking and biodiesel use in public transport engines ensures the Croatian city the victory. Francfort’s project to close for good a main artery road and its information campaign on sustainable mobility also caught the jury’s attention. Arad educational activities and collaboration with stakeholders to improve people’s mobility was a huge success as well.
