HEAL in the media (July - August 2007)

Deca-BDE

Following summer publication of a report from the European Chemicals Bureau (ECB), ENDS Europe Daily (8 August 2007) published an article entitled “Alternatives to deca flame retardant ‘do exist’”. Christian Farrar-Hockley was quoted in the story saying: "I think it’s the first definite acknowledgement [from the commission] that not only do deca substitutes exist, but they’re also on the market."

Mercury

Deutschlandradio Kultur gave Monica Guarinoni an opportunity to talk about the health effects of high and low level exposure to mercury particularly on children’s brains on 1 August 2007. Listen to the radio broadcast.

After the celebrated European Parliamentary vote on 10 July 2007, ENDS Europe Daily featured our joint press release and OneWorld.net quoted Lisette van Vliet: "Parliament’s vote is a huge relief to everyone who wants to get rid of mercury.”

Children

Coverage of the mid-term review of children’s environment and health that took place in Vienna in June 2007 continued with a brief article about a CEHAPE award for eco-sanitation in European Voice’s Water Supplement (5-11 July 2007). Water-free toilets are “good for health and good for the environment,” Diana Smith told EV. They produce “fertiliser from human waste and mean people have greater access to non-smelly toilet and improved hygiene.”

Youth

HEAL video project with young people, “It’s our world, our future too” (2004), was given new promotion when it was featured in the Drum Beat weekly news magazine and website, Communication Initiative, on 27 July 2007.
