The WHO Regional Office for Europe will organise a Ministerial Conference on Counteracting Obesity in collaboration with the European Commission on 15-17 November 2006 in Instanbul.
The Conference aims:
to place obesity high on the public health and political agendas,
to foster greater awareness and high-level political commitment to action, and
to promote international and intersectoral partnerships.
Potential participants include delegates from the 52 Member States in the European Region, as well as experts, observers, and representatives of international and nongovernmental organizations and the mass media.
An NGO delegation led by the International Obesity Task Force, the European Public Health Alliance, the European Heart Network and Beuc will attend the conference and organise side events. More information to follow in the coming months.

Preparatory process
Reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity through health promotion initiatives is one of the objectives of the Children’s Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) under Regional Priority Goal II on reducing morbidity from lack of adequate physical activity by promoting safe and secure human settlements for children .
In the first half of 2006, the European Environment and Health Committee and the CEHAPE Task Force focussed on country progress and possible action on RPG II.
