Transport and Environment publication: “Cleaner is Cheaper”

In Europe it seems that the target of 120 g/km of carbon dioxide emission per car in the EU will not be reached by 2010, established as the latest deadline in the first place. Initially, this amount of emission was to be attained by 2005 to 2010. Today, the average emissions per car are at around 160g/km, which is way beyond the initial target. Consequently, the Commission had to postpone this target to 2012, which is even a questioned possibility.

In this context, T&E released a publication in May 2005 trying to answer three questions:
* “Why it is important that the 120 g/km target is reached by 2012 at the latest?
* Why claims from the automotive industry that this target is not technically feasible are without any foundation?
* What action is now needed to maximise technological developments to reduce CO2 not just to 120 g/km but even lower?”
