WHO/Europe and EEA meeting on energy and health

WHO/Europe and the European Environment Agency will organize a meeting in Rome on 30-31st May on energy and health with the aim of:
* Exchanging information about developments on energy and health;
* Developing a strategy on how best to monitor progress;
* Finalizing the recommendations of the WHO Conference document on energy, sustainable development and health.

Participants to the meeting (technical experts from a number of European countries) will be asked to share their knowledge and experience and to prepare short presentations and short summary background documents.

The relation between energy, sustainable development and health was addressed by the 4th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health (Budapest, 2004) as one of the priority issues of emerging or increasing importance. Ministries agreed to call upon the WHO/Europe and other relevant organizations, within the limits of their competence, to follow up developments on the matter of energy and health, monitor progress in reducing the burden of disease and report back to the intergovernmental meeting to be held by the end of 2007.

WHO/Europe has coordinated a multidisciplinary international team of experts to produce a scientific-technical overview of the impact on health of energy cycles and of energy and transport policies, presented and discussed in Budapest.
