Asthma UK launches charter on asthma in the workplace

On 14 September 2004, Asthma UK launched a Workplace Charter that aims to significantly reduce the impact of asthma in the workplace.

Every year in the UK, 750,000 employees with pre-existing asthma find things at work trigger an asthma attack and an estimated 3,000 people develop occupational asthma because of exposure to dangerous substances at work.

Asthma at Work - Your Charter is aimed at employers, employees and health professionals and is founded on the belief that no-one should have to work in an environment that makes you unwell.

Charter points:
- Nobody should have to breathe secondhand smoke at work.
- Employees should enjoy reasonable protection from asthma triggers at work.
- Employees with asthma need to understand their own condition.
- Employees should be protected from the causes of Occupational Asthma.
- People who develop Occupational Asthma need immediate protection.
- Health surveillance is vital in identifying occupational asthma
- Employees should look for the right help right away.
- Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
- Employers and employees need to keep informed.
- Employees should know how to help someone having an asthma attack.
